Decorating for
Autumn

Bring in the Seasonal change

With Autumn swiftly rolling in, our homes become cosy havens away from the cold and wet weather. As evenings get darker earlier and the leaves start to turn, there is something so satisfying about drawing the curtains, lighting the lamps and tucking yourself away in a cosy room. Because of this we love to compliment the change of seasons by decorating and updating large spaces or nooks and crannies to bring in elements of Autumn.

Follow bellow for a few DS ways we like to decorate and DIY the home this season.

Sprucing up the walls

If you're feeling the itch to go a bit bolder, adding in pattern to your walls can help bring out or compliment any colour palettes or vibe you are looking to create. Our vintage-inspired wallpaper collection is designed to complement any style from classic to contemporary, adding a touch of playfulness and personality to every room.

Roll up your sleeves

For smaller spaces we love getting our DIY on and adding in shelving or rustic hooks. Popping in iron shelf brackets under a vintage cheeseboard like we've done, is the perfect canvas to display your favourite objects on and let them sing!

How to style shelving | DS Edition

Step 1

Start with a statement piece to go a the back of the shelf, for example a couple of plates or as seen here a painting. You could always layer a few objects together as well. Layering is key!

Add various sized, shaped and material vessels or similar. (They could be a favourite sculpture, vase and candle for example). Space them out along the shelving, layering as you go.

Step 2

Continue to add objects of choice to the shelf, here we chose to add some more vintage vessels. The glass bottle with the swirled brown and green pattern running through it is particularly special. Styled shelving like this is a good time to use your favourite objects and let them sing!

Here we've chosen an autumnal colour palette to welcome in (fingers crossed) crispy leaf season.

Step 3

Time to add some stacked hungarian bowls, for some variation in levels as well as two yellow mugs for a pop of colour. Whilst the muted browns and greens work well together, it's always nice to throw it off a little and add a complimentary but brighter colour to your styled shelf.

Final touch

Lastly add a few smaller objects to lift, soften and add a little more texture to your shelf. Here we added some fabric to the bowls to add some softness, an old rope to add some more texture, as well as some lime green flowers to liven the whole shelf up. Plants and flowers are key, if you fancied you could add a lichen covered twig which would be a particularly good addition for an autumnal display.

Decorating with colour

Take a cue from the rich palette of the autumn season and introduce shades of orange, green and mustard for warmth and vibrancy. These can either be added with a bang on painted walls, furniture or soft furnishings. Or add a subtle touch through small homewares such as t-towels, blankets and art.

Here we combined lichen & mustard cushions alongside a ink gingham bedroll to add darker earthier tones to a neutral bed.

Cardamom block walls with an autumnal themed shelf bringing in earthy tones of brown, yellow and grey. The modern poster accent adds a pop of red that compliments the darker colour palette.

.

Even the small details matter, such as hanging a collection of kitchenware & homewares onto a coloured door. Here we've chosen natural dusters and a check apron complimenting wood painted in 'invisible green'.

Rich brown based reds are perfect for this time of year, such as this 'Picture gallery red'. Complimented by neutral gingham patterns and wood furniture for a rustic cosy feel.

Farrow & Ball

If you are looking for some interior colour inspiration, our holy grail for painting is Farrow & Ball

A local contemporary framer to us is RO Frames, some of us here at DS have used their framing service's before and some of us would very much like to. Clearly taking great care and detail their made to measure frames are a thing of beauty.

Bring in texture

Embellishing a room with textures and rich fabrics like wool and velvet lends itself to being appreciated in the colder months when we might be spending our evenings at home rather than lounging in the garden.

Adding a soft throw or additional cushions to your sofa can make a room much more inviting during autumn and winter, or adding a rich rug - which is an element that can be worked for every room.
