Beautiful original vintage book plate of 3 delicate eggs from the common Hoopoe bird or Upupa Epops.
This vintage book plate dating from around 1860's has been carefully mounted in an understated black frame and has the original corresponding page mounted on the back detailing more information about the nesting habits and eggs of the common Hoopoe bird.
The nest, built in May, is placed in the hollow of a tree or a crevice of a wall, and is composted of dry stalks and grass, leaves and feathers.
The eggs vary from four to seven in number, and are a uniform pale bluish grey, faintly speckled with brown. The lower egg on the plate is from a drawing by William Richard Fisher., Esq of Yarmouth, from a speciment in Mr. Doubleday's collection.
