These boards originate from The Netherlands. My Dutch friend and antique dealer John , sources antique pine boards from different cheese makers in Holland. Each consignment is therefore different in its markings and colouring.
The boards were used as shelving by small traditional cheese makers to store the waxed cheeses on whilst they matured but the E.U in their wisdom has decreed that cheeses are no longer to be ripened on wood for hygiene reasons. This seems a shame as wood is said to have antibacterial properties but their loss is certainly our gain.
The reclaimed planks are over a hundred years old, they are wonderfully rustic, each with their individual patina, some with small, some with larger roundels - the markings left from where the waxed cheese wheels sat and ripened on the shelves.
Used in the home, for DIY and interiors projects, wood is a wonderfully versatile material but these boards are particularly attractive due to their pale colour and unique patination. As with any antique pine, there are far fewer knots compared to the modern day fast grown spruce. The boards have nicely rounded edges due to so many years of use and some have beautifully chamfered corners.
At Domestic Science we have used the cheese boards throughout both shops as shelves and have clad entire walls and built a bank of cupboards in our Nailsworth store, using one plank per door, to house all our shop bits and bobs. Both the in-store cafes at Domestic Science - The Canteen and 53, have clad interior walls with the wonderfully pale boards. In Giuseppe’s fabulous Italian restaurant above the Nailsworth store they have boarded out the entire floor, plus clad an exterior wall at the entrance. Used like this, the boards bring so much warmth to a room.
Our customers have used the cheese boards for so many different projects , including table tops, bed heads, shelving, wall cladding, bath panels, wood panelling, kitchen worktops, kitchen cupboards and drawer fronts - the list goes on.
We have some boards in both shops but the longer lengths are stored near to our Nailsworth branch. If you have a project in mind that requires a quantity and would like to view the boards, please email through the website and we can arrange a convenient time to come and have a look.
